Wesley to be Honored February 17th
Get your tickets for the game on February 17th, 2009 against the Boston Bruins. The evening has been designated as Glen Wesley Night and his “number 2″ will officially be retired and lifted to the rafters preceeding that game.
What an appropriate opponent, since Wesley was originally drafted by the Bruins back in 1987 and was eventually acquired by trade in Jim Rutherford’s first deal as a Hartford Whalers General Manager.

Jim Rutherford, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, announced today that the team will honor longtime defenseman Glen Wesley prior to and during its game on Tuesday, Feb. 17 against the Boston Bruins. The team will formally retire Wesley’s No. 2 jersey during a pre-game ceremony, and honor the Hurricanes’ all-time games-played leader throughout the evening.
“Glen played the most games as a Hurricanes player, and did so at a high level,” said Rutherford. “We are honored to have been a part of his distinguished playing career and look forward to paying tribute to his accomplishments.”
The game is part of two mini-game plans for partial season ticketholders. (12 game “white plan” and 26 gamers. ) I’ll have more about this later.

Good Ol Wesley. The red head exemplified the motto that sprang up during the Cup Run…. Just git ‘er done. You could always count on Wesley to get the job done in unassuming fashion. As good as Wesley was for us on the ice, he was GREAT for the community of the ice!

Wesley has been one of my favorite players since he played with Borque. (I used to be a Bruins fan.) He has been consistently underrated and overlooked by the average fan so it’s good to see him get the recognition he deserves. I’m going to do everything I can to be there for this.

I have said it several times and I will say it again that Wesley is one of the greatest hockey players that ever played for the Canes. He was the most underrated player as far as I was concerned. My son and I still cannot imagine not seeing him on the ice this season.
I will never forget last October when we played the Pens (I think our opening game) and Crosby was still all the talk in the NHL at that time and Wesley shut him down all night from scoring. Crosby was so irate he slammed his stick against the wall when Wesley layed out across the ice to stop one of his shots. One of my favorite Wesley moments.
My son and I still hope against hope that maybe next season he will be an assistant coach and we will see him at the bench again at every game. However I am grateful he is still a part of this organization even though we won’t see much of him.
