Big Announcement Coming

The Hurricanes have scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference today, and TSN is reporting Carolina will announce Eric Staal has signed a seven-year contract extension worth more than $8 million a season. Like yesterday’s third jersey unveiling, video of the event will be streamed online. The team’s radio affiliate, 99.9, will also have audio coverage, which is available online. You can watch the CanesVision video by launching the NHL Video Portal a little before the start of the press conference.

The new contract would kick in starting with the 2009-10 season. Staal, 23, will make $5 million in 2008-09, the final season of a three-year deal.
