Canes at Flyers - Pre-game Hype
Today at 1PM, the Carolina Hurricanes will be playing an exhibition game against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Spectrum. For those who might not be aware, the Spectrum is an old hockey arena which opened back in 1967 and is now the home of the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms. The Flyers won the Stanley Cup in the building and it is near and dear to many fan’s hearts. The team moved to the Wachovia Center in 1996.
This game was met with such strong fan response that the Flyers added yet another game to their preseason schedule just so they could play another time in the building. The rink is scheduled to be demolished later this year.
I don’t have a definite lineup yet, but Chip at LSB is reporting what he believes the lines will look like.
- Cullen, O’Neill, LaRose
- Helminen, Petruzalek,Bowman
- Sutter, Eaves, Jensen
- Gillies, Murley, LaCouture
- Pitkanen, Seidenberg
- Kaberle, Flood
- Melichar, Conboy
- Ward - Manzato
Paul Branecky of CH.com has a preview here as well. Branecky also discusses the ever growing list of injured Canes. For some reason the vets seem to be getting hurt, but not the prospects. The hit list includes- Corvo, Wallin, Whitney, Brind’Amour, Williams, Samsonov, Babchuk, Gleason, and Ruutu. Most of the problems are minor, but enough of a factor to keep them out of practice Friday. (Except for Samsonov and Corvo, who did make it to practice but are still being reported as having injuries.)
That makes nine skaters out, in case anyone is counting.
The Flyers are expected to play several of their regulars including Simon Gagne, Mike Richards, and Daniel Briere. They will be fired up and ready to go in front of what should be a near capacity crowd. This will most likely be another tough contest for the Hurricanes.
Don’t forget, the game will be televised on the NHL Network.

We are not doing something right if we already have 9 players with injuries. This could be a problem down the road. Keep the minor-leaguers on speed dial.

maybe this isnt that big of a deal.
but you dont seem worried enough…
9 out?
every other team is playing their stars and we have
our farm team out that.
something seems wrong.

I don’t think anything is wrong, I just think we are using this as a chance to evaluate our youth, especially given our recent injuries.

I’m trying to stay optimistic. Maybe these are minor injuries the players would usually play through, but they’re taking advantage of the prospects still being here and letting them recover fully before the start of the season.

it just wouldnt be Cam Ward if he didnt let in 2 goals on his first 4 shots against……..Im slowly losing my faith in him……I think hes got extreme confidence issues, it seems like he plays to much with his head rather than his instincts. 2 zip Philly mostly through the 1st. Gillies fought Cote, pretty even match, LaCouture fought Asham, really good fight but I think Asham gets the nod by a hair.

I wouldn’t give up on Ward, I mean, the D in front of him is pretty swiss cheese right now.

Well, we give up a shortie only to score on the same pp with half a second left in the first. 3-1 Philly

Alright fine i wont give up on him yet, hes looked good through the second so far (4 min left in second). But this seems just like so many games from last year. How many times did Cam let in a goal or two in the first few min of a game? Nearly every freakin game. Scores 3-2. Cullen made a nice move skating behind the net controlling the puck really well, made a nice pass across ice to Eaves who had a second or two to get right and drilled a wrister to close the gap. 3-2 with 4min left in the second, I’ll update if anything happens between now and intermission. GO CANES

I just checked out the Cane “micro” site, and I have to tell you, I find it a little ironic (wait….stupid) that the initial image is “wrapped” in what appears to be either gauze or fiberglass casting material. Either way you look at it…..it’s a bandage. Wonder who was the genius that thought of that one since most of our “to go” guys are sporting some sort of bandage and the season has not even started.
