1) Ward should get the starters job until he's displaced by poor play in the regular season. A vet shouldn't lose his job with preseason games that aren't a true indication of much.
2) However its a good thing to have a healthy competition between two goalies. It'll keep both sharp, and Peter can go with the hot hand/have a second option if one plays poorly/gets injured. Most teams don't have a back up that they'd want to play significantly

I actually went to the game in Atlanta last year where Leighton got the start and he played really well and the Hurricane's won the game. I believe the St. Louis game was two nights later. But yes... on the road he was very impressive.

A side note... My girlfriend and I happened to get tickets sitting right beside the OTHER TWO hurricanes who were in attendance that night in Atlanta. I'll have to say that I was embarrassed by these two Hurricanes fans (who I did not know) as they acted more like Buffalo fans... We had to make sure the people around us knew that they were not with us! It was a bummer because I like to believe that most 'Canes fans have class...

I thought that they should have kept Leighton here last season when they sent Graham dow. He played very well in my opinion. If I'm not mistaken he played in that tough loss to the Blues and we lost 1-0. I was impressed and thought they should have kept him here.

At least, like Bubba said, Wardo will have a good back up to take pressure off of him.

Dont forget about the less than stellar defense in front of him which I dont think was remedied in the offseason with the main acquisition being a puck mover. He needs to stay focused, the Canes are a puck control team which can force Ward to have to lay idle for stretches at a time.

Oh... and it's also worth mentioning that the 'Canes finally brought Irbe back to finish the season in the NHL before the lockout... he was traded to Columbus shortly following that season and retired after the Lockout. But in the final months of the '03-'04 season Irbe actually played well under Laviolette.

And Jamie Stoor was officially the worst back-up EVER!!! (or was it Storr?)

I also enjoy this post.

I've always thought that Cam was cool and calm, but still does best when pushed to do so. He had no competition in John Graham. But Did great when we was actually behind Gerber in the '05-'06 season...

I think that if the team wants to get the best performance out of Cam Ward then they need to keep a guy like Leighton breathing down his neck and threatening to take his gig...

Great post Bubba. I mentioned this in a blog post a while back, but it's worth mentioning again: Ward is still the third-youngest starter in the league this year (M-A Fleury and Carey Price are younger). It would be short-sighted to give up on him.

If you look at the history of goaltenders in the league they tend to peak between the ages of 28-32. It is the exception not the rule that young goaltenders have success. There are many examples of goalies who have had careers ruined by having too much pressure put on them too soon (see J. Thibault) It would be good for Ward to have a mentor back up, where ward was clearly the number one but also could be rested at various points in the season. I don't ever think a 1A 1B system works over the long term. Goalies need confidence, it's a very psychological position. In order to keep that confidence they need to feel it from the orginization and the coach. Carolina has never done a very good job of doing that for it's goalies as well documented in this article. Very well written Bubba. Good job!
