An Update on Nate Hagemo

Nate Hagemo

Nate Hagemo

The Naple Daily News posted a really thorough article Tuesday on the progress of former Hurricanes’ second-round pick Nate Hagemo. Hagemo, who was invited to the Canes’ rookie conditioning camp this summer, is trying to earn a spot with Carolina’s ECHL affiliate, the Florida Everblades.

Hagemo’s drug problems and run-ins with the law are well-documented, and it’s good to see him continuing to try and get his life on the right path. Carolina owns the rights to the talented defenseman, who was selected by the Hurricanes with the 58th overall pick in 2005, until 2009.

  1. I remember reading his story back in the summer. It’s always to see a good story. I wish him the best of luck and hope that he can keep his life on the right track. With these kinds of problems it is a constant struggle and probably something he will have to battle to stay ahead of for the rest of his life. I think it speaks highly of the Hurricanes organization to give him a legitimate chance to play and the support he needs to battle his problems.

    Good luck to him.

  2. Speaking of Hagemo, there is another recent article about him on “The Hamiltonian”, comparing him to Josh Hamilton.

  3. I’m not familar with Nate, but I wish him well also. I’m like you Cory, I think it’s great that he is trying to get his life on track. Kudos to the Canes organization for giving him another chance. Good luck to Nate!

  4. Who is Josh Hamilton?

  5. Hamilton is a local kid who was at one time the number one draft choice in all of baseball. He got injured, fell into drugs, and was suspended from MLB. But later, he found religion, got a second chance, and now is making a good name for himself.

He was the hero of this year’s home run derby.

  6. I vaguely remember a baseball player being honored (presented with a jersey) last season at a Canes game. Was it Josh?

Anyway, thanks for the update on Hagemo. I remember seeing the mugshot and just cringing. A meth case if I ever saw one.

Good on the Canes for giving him a second chance and as always, thanks boys for the great blog.

  7. AD, you have a good memory, yes that was Hamilton.
