Ryan Back To Albany, Eaves Out, Others Close To Returning

The Canes have reassigned forward Michael Ryan to the AHL’s Albany River Rats, according to a release from the team. Ryan averaged 5:33 in the two games he’s played with Carolina, registering four shots on goal.

The move means someone from the injury pile should be ready to play Wednesday. It won’t be Patrick Eaves. He’s out indefinitely, according to LSB. With Ryan reassigned to Albany, either (or perhaps both?) Matt Cullen or Brandon Sutter should be returning for the game vs. Washington at the RBC Center. Both have returned to practice.

LSB also reports that injured defensemen Joni Pitkanen and Frank Kaberle are close to coming back. Pitkanen is practicing with the team and Kaberle is back skating.

  1. It was nice seeing Brandon Sutter interviewed by the Canadian broadcasters on Center Ice. That made me very hopeful that he will be the one playing this week.

  2. What do you guys make of this quote I picked up from LSB??……..

In further analyzing the Atlanta game, Laviolette thought the Canes were too lax offensively.

“Defensively we didn’t give up a lot,” he said. “There weren’t a lot of shots (22). We didn’t give up a lot of quality chances. But we gave up five goals, so we need to be better.

Okay, so how I translate is “The defense played good, held them to only 22 shots, most werent even quality chances, yet Ward gives up five goals, so he needs to be better.”

I believe it means we’ll be seeing Leighton in net wednesday

  3. Last I heard, Sutter was still wearing the “no contact” jersey and is probably at least a week out. I would imagine that Cully is the one who’s ready to go.

  4. I just heard on 99.9 the Fan that Cullen will play Wed. night……

    GO CANES

  5. What puzzles me is when players and coaches alike come out and say things like: “We just didn’t come out with the right energy tonight and that is not good.” Oh, really? No sh!t. Why? Why do they not come out ready to play and win? Do they not earn a paycheck bigger than everybody who visits this blog combined? What kind of “motivation” do these slackers need?

Sounds like this team has a major leadership problem.

I keep saying this: if the front office is worried now about the teams play, wait until the seats suddenly become vacant if this uninspired play keeps up. They will have to contend more than just a loss in the W/L column. I live east of the Triangle and will not spend my money to see a trashy 30 min effort out of this team. I will pay for Carolina Panthers tickets faster than canes tickets. At least they play for a solid 60 min instead of putting on the blinders for long periods of the game.

  6. This means we need to score at least 5 goals to get a point out of this.
Is this JR’s hubris, stubbornness, or just plane stupidity that keeps this franchise obsessed with Cam Ward. The guy got hot one time. Great!
We have all had hot and passionate relationships that lasted for a few months. Guess what….when they are over they are over and you cant get it back.
Wardo has lost it, plain and simple. Time to move on.
If we cant trade him, take a page out of Tampa’s book and send him to the AHL, I am sure Marc Dennis would like the company. It clears his salary of the books and we can be rid of him in two years. Hell, maybe some one will claim him on waivers. We couldn’t be so lucky.

  7. One question I have is all of this bad talk about Ward and how bad he has played over the past couple of seasons but after looking back and confirming my thought, was Ward not tied for 4th most wins by a goalie in the NHL last season? I mean that doesnt happen by luck, and I think you all would agree with that. Did the team miss the playoffs last year, yes but to put that on the goalie who won ALOT of games, I just dont think is fair. Any thoughts?

  8. Douchebbag crawl back to hole you live in…you are insane, Cam is young, and has played well over all. You simply can not blame every loss on one player even the goalie. Just as you can not credit every win to a single player…this is a team sport and if too many members of the team have an off day…you lose plain and simple!

  9. Thank you Caniac, FINALLY someone gets on here and talks like they have some sense in them! Cam is the future of this team!

  11. good joke hot,
Actually I am just a TRUE fan who cares about this team and knows something about hockey, unlike some people in here.

  12. Hasn’t Ward improved statistically every year, especially in the all important save-percentage? If you discount his freakish 05-06 playoffs, he has gotten steadily better every year. He is a solid goalie. If the Canes had some much better option that might be one thing, but as is, I think he is the best goalie we have, or are likely to get.

  13. Jonathan,

How do you know what some of these people do or do not know about hockey. I know for a fact that one of the regular posters on this sight happens to be a very good hockey player in his own right, and shares the concerns we are having with Cam’s play. Disagree, if you like, but please don’t disparage the other commenters. The coolest things about CanesCountry over all of the other “forums” devoted to our hockey club is that there is a lot of good discussion without people trying to belittle others.

    What is that then?

I am upset at the situation that is going on with our goalies. I do not think that it is in the best interest of our hockey team. On a night in and night out basis Ward gives us the best chance to win.
